India-Nepal Rail Link Opens New Trade Era

The India-Nepal rail corridor has entered a new phase with the successful operation of the first-ever direct commercial container freight train. This train, carrying canola, journeyed from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal, signifying the activation of the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol. This new framework enables direct rail movement of bulk cargo without the need for transhipment at the border, a significant improvement over previous arrangements. The initiative builds upon the broad-gauge rail link between Jogbani, India, and Biratnagar, Nepal, which was inaugurated in June 2023. The signing of the revised Letter of Exchange in November 2025 paved the way for this direct commercial rail movement. The Northeast Frontier Railway has played a crucial role in this achievement, aiming to strengthen international rail connectivity and streamline cross-border trade.
