Summary
- India mandates phased 60% local content for HVDC substations by FY35.
- HVDC technology is crucial for integrating renewables and grid modernization.
- Key Indian manufacturers benefit from specialized HVDC equipment demand.

India's Power Ministry has revised its roadmap to achieve 60% Minimum Local Content (MLC) in high voltage direct current (HVDC) substations by FY35. This phased approach begins with a 30% MLC requirement by FY28, escalating to 40% by FY30, 50% by FY32, and finally reaching the 60% target by FY35. This initiative aligns with India's vision for self-sufficiency and aims to cultivate a strong domestic manufacturing sector for HVDC equipment.
The nation's extensive transmission network, boasting over 425,000 circuit km of lines, is undergoing significant technological upgrades. The deployment of HVDC technology is central to this transition, enabling efficient long-distance power transmission and the integration of renewable energy sources. This modernization is crucial for achieving a carbon-neutral energy system and expanding inter-regional connectivity.
As outlined in the National Electricity Plan, approximately 14.5 GW of the 32.3 GW HVDC pipeline has already been tendered. This surge in HVDC projects is creating substantial opportunities for Indian transformer manufacturers. They are increasingly supplying high-value converter transformers and reactors, segments with a limited number of qualified suppliers like Hitachi Energy India, Siemens Energy India, GE Vernova T&D India, and BHEL.
