India Life Insurers See 16.6% Premium Surge
10 Jul
Summary
- New business premiums rose 16.6% in Q1 FY27.
- Private insurers' market share nears forty percent.
- June premiums grew 13.1%, reversing last year's dip.

India's life insurance industry commenced FY27 with a strong performance, reporting a 16.6% year-on-year increase in new business premiums (NBP) during the first quarter. This growth was primarily fueled by private insurers who have been steadily increasing their market share, now standing at nearly forty percent. The surge is attributed to sustained demand for retail products and a notable recovery in the group business segment.
On a monthly basis, the industry also demonstrated a significant rebound in June. New business premiums experienced a thirteen percent rise compared to the same month last year, effectively reversing the 3.1 percent contraction recorded in June of the prior year. Private insurers led this monthly recovery, with a substantial 36.8 percent increase in premium collections.
The positive trend in the life insurance sector is expected to continue, supported by expanding digital distribution channels and growing demand for protection and annuity products. A gradual recovery in group business is also anticipated, although potential regulatory changes could prompt further diversification in distribution strategies among insurers.
