India's Popcorn Seeds: A Farmers' Revolution
24 Aug
Summary
- New popcorn hybrids 'Krisna459' and 'Godari234' launched in India.
- These seeds reduce dependence on imported popcorn genetics.
- Over 17,500 farmers across eight states to benefit directly.

Gourmet Popcornica launched two high-expansion, non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seeds, 'Krisna459' and 'Godari234', on August 24, 2026. The launch occurred at the company's factory in Musunuru, Andhra Pradesh, with Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in attendance.
These indigenous hybrids are developed to match the quality of imported seeds while offering better pest tolerance and yields suitable for Indian farmers. This move aims to significantly reduce India's reliance on imported popcorn seed and grain, which has historically dominated the premium market.
Over 17,500 farmers in eight Indian states are expected to benefit directly from cultivating these new hybrids. Gourmet Popcornica's initiative provides assured off-take and contract pricing, fostering economic growth for farming families and reinforcing the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision.
The Indian popcorn maize market has seen substantial growth, with domestic production now meeting nearly 70 percent of national demand. The introduction of 'Krisna459' and 'Godari234' is projected to help India completely end popcorn imports by 2030.
