India IPO Market Splits: Mainboard Pauses, SME Surges
3 Jun
Summary
- Mainboard IPO market saw no listings in May 2026 due to geopolitical uncertainty.
- SME IPO segment remained active, raising ₹733 crore in May 2026.
- Listing gains have fallen to 8%, the lowest since 2019, impacting investor sentiment.

The Indian initial public offering (IPO) market has bifurcated, with the mainboard segment experiencing a significant slowdown while the SME segment shows resilience. As of May 2026, the mainboard market recorded no new listings, a situation not seen since March 2025, attributed to geopolitical tensions in West Asia and subsequent global risk aversion. This pause follows record fundraising in fiscal years 2025 and 2026.
The SME IPO market, however, has maintained its activity. In May 2026 alone, 17 SME companies successfully raised ₹733 crore. This sustained interest in smaller issues highlights investor appetite for high-growth ventures, even amidst broader market uncertainties. Experts note that while SME activity indicates risk appetite, it does not necessarily reflect deep institutional confidence.
Despite a robust pipeline of over ₹2.4 trillion in SEBI-approved IPOs, actual listings are contingent on market timing and investor sentiment. Weak post-listing returns, with approximately two-thirds of 2026 IPOs trading below issue price and average listing gains at a low of 8%, have dampened retail and HNI interest. This shift necessitates a more selective approach from issuers and investors alike.
