5 Oct
Summary
- Applications are invited for establishing mineral exchanges.
- Trading will initially focus on five key minerals.
- Registration is valid for 25 years with specific fees.

The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has officially initiated the process for setting up mineral exchanges across India. Eligible companies are now invited to apply for the establishment and operation of these platforms. This initiative follows the notification of the Mineral Exchange Rules, 2026, on June 30, which establishes the necessary regulatory framework.
Existing commodity trading platforms will have a six-month window from the operationalization of the first mineral exchange to secure registration. The IBM, designated as the registration and regulatory authority, has set November 2 as the deadline for submitting applications. Initially, these exchanges will support trading in iron, chromite, bauxite, limestone, and manganese.
These technology-enabled exchanges aim to create a transparent system for price discovery and dissemination. They will also streamline commodity supply contracts and ensure timely delivery. To qualify, an applicant must be a company limited by shares with a minimum net worth of ₹50 crore. Registration will be valid for 25 years, with a prescribed fee structure including application, registration, and annual fees.
