India's infrastructure sector saw a remarkable surge in May 2026, with tenders issued reaching Rs 2.1 lakh crore, a substantial 66% increase compared to the previous year. This significant jump signals a robust acceleration heading into the new financial year.
Highways were a dominant force, capturing nearly half of all tendering activity at Rs 99,500 crore, triple the amount seen in May 2025. Real estate also showed strong growth, with tenders reaching Rs 25,500 crore, largely driven by a mega Rs 21,500 crore residential township project in Navi Mumbai.
Order awards in May 2026 crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark, more than doubling year-on-year. Larsen and Toubro led the pack, securing orders worth Rs 25,300 crore across various segments. Afcons Infrastructure followed with Rs 5,400 crore in orders for offshore breakwater construction.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) also reported positive developments. Its highway construction performance in FY26 surpassed its annual target, completing 5,313 km. NHAI raised approximately Rs 28,300 crore through asset monetisation in FY26 and plans to raise Rs 35,000 crore in FY27.
Key tenders issued during May 2026 included a Rs 9,000 crore greenfield highway project by NHAI and a Rs 5,500 crore tender for the Kamala Hydroelectric Project by NHPC. Additionally, tenders for central secretariat buildings in New Delhi and a metro line extension in Noida were also significant.
