India's Inflation Spreads Beyond Food, Fuel
8 Oct
Summary
- Price increases are now seen across many CPI items, not just a few.
- Services inflation also rose, indicating wider spread of price pressures.
- RBI raised its FY27 inflation forecast to 5.2% and tightened policy.

Inflationary pressures in India are becoming more widespread, affecting a larger portion of the consumer price index (CPI) basket. The proportion of items experiencing price increases above the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% target rose to approximately 37% in August, up from 23% in April. This broadening indicates that recent inflation surges are no longer limited to a few specific goods.
This trend accompanies a general pickup in both headline and underlying inflation rates. Services inflation also saw an increase in August, suggesting a wider distribution of price pressures beyond just goods. Factors contributing to this include a deficient monsoon, El Niño conditions, and rising global energy prices, which have pushed fuel inflation up significantly.
In response to the evolving inflation outlook, the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee recently increased the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5%. The central bank has also raised its inflation forecast for the fiscal year 2027 to 5.2%. Monetary policy actions are aimed at curbing immediate supply shocks and preventing second-round effects from embedding into inflation expectations and pricing behavior.
