India's Independence Day Sales Surge 25%

This past Independence Day marked a significant boost for Indian brands and retailers, with sales value climbing by up to 25% and volume by 5-7% compared to the previous year. This strong performance has set an optimistic tone for the upcoming festive season, which traditionally begins with Onam and culminates with Diwali.

Despite increased input costs leading to price hikes of up to 40% on items like smartphones and televisions in the past 10 months, sales volumes saw growth in these categories. Retailers like Flipkart reported sold-out inventory for several popular models. Amazon India noted a more than twofold increase in demand across electronics, fashion, and beauty, with a preference for premium products.

Reliance Retail recorded its best Independence Day sales, exceeding 20% growth in grocery, electronics, and apparel. Department store chain Lifestyle and electronics retailer Vijay Sales also reported double-digit year-on-year growth, driven by increased foot traffic and sales volume rather than just billing value. Online sales also surpassed expectations, with Flipkart noting performance ahead of estimates across multiple categories.

Brands like Super Plastronics and Haier India experienced excellent sales. Super Plastronics sold out its entire TV stock, achieving 14% year-on-year growth and missing out on higher figures due to inventory limitations. Haier India reported 45-50% value growth and 30-35% volume growth, particularly in premium appliance categories, viewing these results as strong indicators for the remainder of the year.
