India Gold Duty Soars: Bullion Prices Skyrocket
14 May
Summary
- India's import duty on gold and silver increased significantly.
- MCX gold and silver futures surged sharply following the announcement.
- Higher duty may curb imports, potentially aiding the rupee and CAD.

The Indian government has implemented a substantial increase in the effective import/customs duty on gold and silver, raising it from approximately 6% to 15%. This significant hike directly impacts the domestic market by increasing the landed cost of bullion, as India relies heavily on imports for its gold and silver needs.
Following the announcement, MCX gold and silver prices reacted sharply. Gold futures on MCX surged over 6-7%, while silver futures jumped around 6-8% on the day of the announcement. This rapid rise reflects the immediate adjustment to the higher import costs, widening the premium over international COMEX/LBMA prices.
The pricing formula for MCX indicates that an increase in customs duty alone can drive up domestic prices, even if international gold prices remain stable. Factors like strong domestic premiums and arbitrage widening also contribute to these price movements.
Potentially, this higher duty could decrease official bullion imports, which may offer support to the Indian rupee and the country's current account deficit. However, there are concerns that increased prices could dampen demand for jewelry, leading to reduced purchases by jewelers and a potential cooling of physical premiums over time. Additionally, slower jewelry demand might inadvertently increase the likelihood of gold smuggling.
