India's Fuel Retailers Face Billion-Dollar Losses
18 Jun
Summary
- State fuel retailers lost 1 trillion rupees in Q1 2026.
- Borrowings by major oil companies have surged significantly.
- Diesel sales are now capped at 200 litres per vehicle.

Indian state fuel retailers are grappling with unprecedented financial strain, having incurred revenue losses amounting to 1 trillion rupees in the first quarter of 2026. This situation stems from the continued sale of essential fuels, including gasoline, gasoil, and liquefied petroleum gas, at prices significantly below market value.
The financial pressure has forced major public sector undertakings such as Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp, and Hindustan Petroleum Corp to increase their borrowings substantially to absorb these ongoing losses.
In response to escalating concerns about bulk purchases and potential supply disruptions amid geopolitical uncertainties, a temporary restriction has been placed on High-Speed Diesel sales. Fuel stations are now limited to dispensing a maximum of 200 litres of diesel per vehicle or customer daily. This measure aims to prevent diversion and ensure a more stable supply chain for the nation's fuel needs.
