West Asia Crisis Sparks Indian Export Chaos

Renewed conflict in West Asia is severely impacting India's overseas shipments, creating a complex web of logistical challenges for exporters. The crisis has led to container evacuation delays, a shortage of vessels, and significant congestion at key Indian ports like Mundra and JNPT. Foreign shipping lines are imposing emergency and peak season surcharges, dramatically inflating costs and causing shipment delays.

Ocean freight rates have seen an unprecedented surge. For instance, rates from India's west coast to Argentina have more than doubled to $9,000. Shipments to the US east coast now cost $9,500, up from $5,500, and rates to Russia have more than doubled to $5,000. Even routes to conflict-affected West Asia have seen rates jump to around $3,500 from $400.

These escalating costs and supply chain bottlenecks are directly affecting exporters. Companies are facing inventory build-ups, with one exporter reporting Rs 8 crore worth of goods stuck due to delays. Many are experiencing order cancellations as they struggle to secure space on vessels or afford the increased freight charges, impacting India's global trade competitiveness.

Ports on India's west coast, heavily reliant on Gulf shipping routes, are particularly affected by the disruption through the Strait of Hormuz. While India has explored alternative Omani ports, the core issue of vessel availability and high freight costs persists. Exporters are urging the government to engage with European nations, where many shipping lines are based, to seek preferential treatment for Indian routes amidst ongoing trade deal negotiations.
