Air Cargo Crisis: Exporters Demand Demurrage Waiver
2 Mar
Summary
- Apparel exporters seek waiver of airport demurrage charges.
- Flight disruptions due to West Asia crisis are causing delays.
- Exporters face undue financial burden from stranded cargo.

Apparel exporters have formally requested the government to waive demurrage charges on export cargo stranded at airports. The ongoing crisis in West Asia has led to widespread disruptions in international flight operations, including airspace closures and schedule irregularities. These unforeseen circumstances have directly impacted the timely movement of export consignments from India.
Consequently, export cargo is currently held up at multiple airport cargo terminals across the country. The Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) highlighted that these delays are due to factors beyond exporters' control. They are now appealing to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to instruct Cargo Terminal Operators to grant a waiver for these charges.
The AEPC Chairman emphasized that imposing demurrage in such situations would place an excessive financial burden on exporters. Such relief is crucial to maintain confidence and continuity in India's air cargo trade during this challenging period.
