EV Demand Surges 2.5x Amid Middle East Conflict
28 May
Summary
- EV bookings have more than doubled due to Middle East conflict.
- Tata Motors plans a 50% increase in EV production capacity.
- Concerns arise over reduced fuel efficiency with higher ethanol blends.

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has significantly boosted electric vehicle (EV) demand in India, with bookings reportedly doubling to 2.5 times their previous levels. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd (TMPV) is responding by planning a 50% increase in its EV production capacity, aiming for 15,000 units per month within the next three to four months, contingent on supplier capabilities.
Amidst rising crude oil prices, the Indian government is exploring increased ethanol blending in petrol beyond the current E20 mandate. However, Shailesh Chandra, MD & CEO of TMPV, has voiced concerns that higher ethanol content could reduce fuel efficiency due to its lower energy density and potentially degrade vehicle components faster. He stressed the need for careful implementation while supporting the broader goal of energy security.
Chandra also noted that while EV penetration is around 5-6%, it could reach 8-10% this year if supply constraints ease. TMPV's EV booking mix reached 33% in May. The company anticipates industry growth of around 10% in FY27 but acknowledges that geopolitical factors and fuel prices might influence consumer sentiment, potentially shifting demand towards more fuel-efficient technologies like EVs and CNG vehicles.
