India Eases FDI Rules for Neighbors
30 Apr
Summary
- India awaits notification to implement relaxed FDI norms for land-bordering nations.
- FEMA rule changes are necessary before relaxed norms can take effect.
- Approvals for electronics sector investments may be expedited to 60 days.

India is anticipating a formal notification from the Department of Economic Affairs to enact relaxed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms for its land-bordering countries. These updated regulations, approved by the Union Cabinet nearly 50 days prior, are intended to streamline investment processes and reduce compliance burdens for businesses.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has indicated that while their decisions are made, modifications to Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) rules are also required. Once implemented, many proposed investments are expected to benefit from a transition from approval requirements to simpler reporting obligations.
This initiative, approved on March 10, amends the 2020 Press Note 3 policy, which was initially introduced to prevent opportunistic takeovers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The relaxed norms could significantly accelerate approvals, with key sectors such as electronic components and capital goods potentially receiving clearances within a 60-day timeframe, thereby enhancing India's attractiveness for foreign investment.
