India's Defence Sector Gears Up for Serial Production
27 Aug
Summary
- Defence manufacturing shifts to serial production phase.
- Key programs like QRSAM and AMCA offer significant opportunities.
- Naval orders provide a broad and sustained growth pipeline.

India's defence manufacturing sector is advancing into a significant serial production phase, with several large indigenous programs transitioning from development to full-scale manufacturing. Key initiatives such as the P-75(I), LCA Mk-1A, and Next Generation Corvettes are progressing towards this critical stage.
The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) program is identified as a major near-term catalyst, offering substantial opportunities for multiple listed defense companies. The Army tender is estimated at approximately Rs 300 billion, with specific packages valued up to Rs 110-120 billion.
Furthermore, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program is set to create a broad defense ecosystem, with companies like L&T, BEL, Tata Advanced Systems, Bharat Forge, BEML, and Data Patterns involved in its development. Even companies not part of the winning consortium can benefit from specific component orders.
Naval procurement remains a significant area of opportunity, encompassing programs like Next Generation Corvettes, P-17B frigates, and Mine Counter-Measure Vessels. These naval initiatives are expected to generate further demand for electronics, propulsion systems, and other specialized components.
While defense orders involve long execution cycles, with programs like QRSAM estimated at seven to eight years, FY27 is projected to be a key year for execution and order conversion. A more significant production inflection is anticipated in FY28 and FY29, supported by ongoing capacity expansions by companies like GRSE, BEML, and Bharat Forge.
Despite execution and timing risks, Anand Rathi maintains HAL as its Top Pick, citing its earnings visibility, extensive order pipeline, and favorable valuation. The brokerage has 'Hold' ratings on Solar Industries and Astra Microwave Products due to reduced valuation upside following recent share price increases.
