Falling Oil Prices Can't Lift Consumer Mood
24 Jun
Summary
- Consumer confidence declined for the third consecutive month in May.
- Delayed monsoon and food inflation continue to weigh on households.
- Middle-income groups increasingly use digital credit for daily expenses.

Consumer sentiment in India has seen a notable decline for three consecutive months, with May marking the latest downturn. Despite a significant drop in crude oil prices, falling from a peak of around $113 to approximately $78 a barrel, consumer confidence has not seen a substantial recovery.
Several factors are contributing to this persistent caution. A rainfall deficit of around 40% is raising concerns about agricultural sowing, particularly in central Indian states. This could potentially curb rural demand and exacerbate food price inflation.
Food prices increased for the third consecutive month in May, contributing to a headline retail inflation rate of 3.9%. While this is within the Reserve Bank of India's tolerance limit, economists anticipate inflation to average higher for the fiscal year. Rising costs for essentials like fuel and food are directly impacting household budgets.
The Reserve Bank of India's Consumer Confidence Survey revealed a broad-based decline in both current conditions and future expectations. Lower-income households have experienced the sharpest deterioration in sentiment, with many increasingly relying on digital credit to manage daily expenses. Personal loan disbursements grew by 16% year-on-year in April.
Conversely, affluent households earning over ₹10 lakh annually have become more cautious, with their sentiment deteriorating for five consecutive months. Many are postponing discretionary purchases, and buying intentions for consumer durables have decreased. Retail demand for apparel and footwear also softened in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region after mid-May.
Looking ahead, the recovery of consumer sentiment remains uncertain. While lower crude oil prices may eventually impact wholesale inflation, retail inflation's trajectory depends on government fuel policies and the monsoon's progress. The upcoming festive season will be a crucial indicator of the true resilience of India's consumption recovery.
