22 Sep
Summary
- First-time buyer share increased 10 percentage points in H1 FY27.
- GST reduced on smaller cars to 18% from 28% to boost affordability.
- Entry-level SUV sales saw substantial year-on-year growth.

First-time car buyers have made a strong comeback in India, elevating their contribution to sales by an estimated 10 percentage points in the first half of the current fiscal year (FY27). This marks the sharpest increase since the pandemic, primarily driven by the government's rationalization of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Last year, GST on vehicles less than 4 meters in length was reduced from 28% to 18%, significantly improving affordability. Maruti Suzuki reported a jump in first-time buyers to 54% of its sales from April to August, compared to 42% previously. Tata Motors also observed a 6-7% rise in this segment.
The favorable tax adjustment has revitalized demand for entry-level passenger vehicles. Sales of mini cars like Maruti's Alto and S-Presso saw a 96% increase. Overall industry growth accelerated to 28% year-on-year in April-August, a stark turnaround from a slight decline in the first half of FY26.
Entry-level SUVs have also experienced substantial growth, with Mahindra & Mahindra's utility vehicle sales rising by nearly 20% in the first five months of FY27. This trend, coupled with strong hatchback sales, indicates a broadening market base and renewed momentum towards mass motorisation in India.
