India to Build 80% of New Rafale Jets Locally
16 Jan
Summary
- Around 80% of 114 planned Rafale jets will be built in India.
- Manufacturing facilities may shift from France to India.
- India aims for a regional MRO hub for Rafale aircraft.

In a significant defense deal, India is set to locally manufacture around 80% of the 114 Rafale fighter jets for its Air Force. This ambitious project entails the transfer of some manufacturing facilities from France to India, aiming to boost domestic production capabilities. Negotiations are ongoing to maximize the localized content within the agreement.
The plan also includes establishing a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India. This move is expected to enhance the serviceability of the Rafale fleet and could position India as a regional hub for MRO services for Dassault aircraft.
The Rafale jet has been identified as the most suitable option for the Indian Air Force's requirements, boasting a high serviceability rate of approximately 90%. This acquisition is critical as the Indian Air Force faces depleting squadron numbers and increasing security challenges.
