India Accelerates Piped Gas Amidst Cylinder Fears
14 Mar
Summary
- Government prioritizes piped natural gas connections due to LPG cylinder supply fears.
- New refuelling cycles set: 25 days for urban and 45 days for rural areas.
- Commercial users facing LPG issues will be transitioned to PNG connections.

The government is intensifying efforts to promote piped natural gas (PNG) connections across India, a move spurred by widespread anxieties regarding potential shortages of LPG cylinders. This strategic shift aims to ensure a more stable gas supply for consumers.
To manage existing supplies, new refuelling and reordering cycles have been implemented. Urban areas will now operate on a 25-day cycle, while rural areas will follow a 45-day cycle, with these timelines determined by observed consumption patterns. These adjustments are designed to optimize distribution and availability.
Furthermore, the government is actively facilitating a transition for commercial consumers who have encountered difficulties or disruptions in their LPG supply. GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) has been instructed to expedite the provision of PNG connections to all eligible commercial entities where such connections are feasible, ensuring a smoother and more reliable energy supply.
