18 Aug
Summary
- India plans drone acquisitions worth ₹20,000 crore.
- Defence Ministry doubled field commander powers for drone buys.
- Three Indian firms, Zen, IdeaForge, and Astra, benefit.

Modern warfare is increasingly embracing large drone swarms, with China reportedly equipping each infantry unit with around 1,000 drones. This evolving landscape necessitates advanced counter-drone solutions, presenting a substantial procurement opportunity for Indian drone manufacturers.
The Indian government has planned drone acquisitions totaling ₹20,000 crore through Fast Track Procurement. Further bolstering this, the Defence Acquisition Council has approved capital acquisitions worth ₹52,000 crore for drones, including advanced systems like jet-powered kamikaze drones. This marks a significant shift in defense spending towards surveillance, interception, and autonomous platforms.
Procurement is becoming more decentralized, with local command centers now empowered to directly purchase qualifying Unmanned Aerial Vehicle systems up to ₹5 crore per unit. This move is expected to streamline traditional procurement timelines.
Three Indian companies are poised to benefit: Zen Technologies, a leader in counter-drone solutions and simulators; IdeaForge Technology, specializing in dual-use drones for defense and civil applications; and Astra Microwave Products, focusing on radar and electronic warfare systems for drone defense.
These companies collectively possess robust order books and are targeting both domestic and international markets, signaling a strong future for India's indigenous drone industry.
