21 Sep
Summary
- Nationwide bank strike proposed from Sept 28-30, 2026.
- Strike could mean five consecutive days of closures.
- Unions demand five-day banking and pension upgrades.
Bank customers in India may face significant disruptions as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a proposed nationwide strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. This strike, immediately following a weekend and a bank holiday on September 26, could result in bank branches remaining closed for five consecutive days. The UFBU, which claims to represent 90% of banking sector employees, is advocating for several key demands, including the implementation of a five-day banking week and improvements to pension schemes. This industrial action is also scheduled during the banking sector's half-yearly closing period, potentially exacerbating its impact.
In response to the strike threat, the Finance Ministry is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting with the heads of public sector banks and regional rural banks on Monday. The primary agenda is to devise contingency plans to maintain essential customer services and banking operations throughout the proposed strike dates. Banks like the State Bank of India and Union Bank of India have advised customers to complete all urgent branch transactions before September 26. While ATMs, mobile banking, and internet banking will remain accessible, customers requiring branch-specific services are urged to plan accordingly. The government aims to minimize customer inconvenience by ensuring alternative channels and services remain functional.
