3 Apr
Summary
- Passenger vehicle growth to moderate to 4-6% in FY27.
- Utility vehicles now make up nearly 67% of passenger car sales.
- Tractor sales are projected to reach an all-time high in FY26.

India's passenger vehicle industry anticipates a growth moderation to 4-6% in FY27. This forecast, issued by ICRA, considers a high baseline and evolving macroeconomic factors. For FY26, wholesale volumes are estimated to grow by 7-9%, buoyed by festive demand and new model introductions.
A significant structural shift is evident, with utility vehicles comprising approximately 67% of total sales, underscoring a sustained trend towards premium vehicles. The increasing adoption of alternative powertrains like CNG and electric vehicles also contributes to demand diversification.
Meanwhile, the tractor industry is set to achieve an all-time high in wholesale volumes for FY26, experiencing a substantial 22.8% growth in the first 11 months of the fiscal year. This surge is attributed to favorable monsoons and improved agricultural output.
Looking ahead, tractor industry growth is expected to ease to 1-4% in FY2027, reflecting a normalization in demand after a period of sharp increase. Future tractor demand will closely track monsoon performance and rural income levels, with potential El Nino conditions posing a risk.
Despite anticipated moderations in growth for both sectors, the credit profiles of original equipment manufacturers are expected to remain robust, supported by low leverage and healthy liquidity.
