India's Auto Sales Shift: Alternative Fuels Lead!
7 Sep
Summary
- Alternative fuel vehicles outsold petrol cars in India for the first time.
- Lower running costs and E20 petrol concerns drive consumer choice.
- Alternative models captured nearly 42% of passenger vehicle sales.

In a historic first for India's automotive market, sales of alternative-fuel passenger vehicles, including compressed natural gas, hybrid, and electric models, exceeded those of petrol-powered cars in August. This pivot away from traditional petrol vehicles reflects a growing consumer preference for options with lower running expenses.
The transition is also influenced by consumer uncertainty surrounding India's move to E20 petrol, a blend containing 20% ethanol designed to lessen reliance on imported crude oil. Concerns have been raised about potential impacts on fuel economy and engine performance, particularly for older vehicles.
As of August, alternative-fuel models represented nearly 42% of passenger vehicle sales, slightly edging out petrol vehicles which held around 41%. This development signifies a dramatic change from just over a year ago, when petrol vehicles led the market by a considerable margin.
Overall automobile retail sales in India saw a robust increase of 17.5% year-on-year in August, reaching 2.4 million vehicles. This growth was largely propelled by strong demand in the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments.
