NITI Aayog: Embrace Tech for Global Markets
12 Jun
Summary
- Indian agri- and water-tech startups must adopt new technologies.
- Startups should move beyond basic problem-solving to enter new markets.
- Foreign startups adapt products and find new market opportunities abroad.

NITI Aayog programme director Himanshu Joshi has urged Indian agri- and water-tech startups to adopt advanced technologies and target new markets. Joshi stated on Thursday that many startups in these sectors are limited by a focus on basic problem-solving, alongside challenges with technological maturity and regulatory frameworks.
Drawing inspiration from NITI Aayog's international projects, Joshi highlighted how foreign startups successfully adapted their offerings to local conditions, thereby uncovering fresh market potential. He recounted the experience of a global water-tech startup that, after initial testing in India, found opportunities to serve markets across the Global South.
Another example involved an agri-drone startup that expanded its services from identifying coconuts to using AI for optimal harvesting times and disease detection. Joshi also advised government officials to procure solutions from innovation challenges rather than solely supporting pilot projects, advocating for direct adoption of emerging technologies.
