IGL Ramps Up Piped Gas to 5,000 Daily
12 Apr
Summary
- Piped gas connections daily have tripled to over 2,000.
- Fast food chains are rapidly shifting to piped natural gas.
- Government mandates household switch from LPG to PNG.

Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) is accelerating its expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections across Delhi-NCR, driven by a national push to diversify energy sources away from imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The company has seen a significant surge in daily PNG connections, increasing from 600-700 to over 2,000, with a target of reaching 5,000 connections daily. This expansion aims to alleviate pressure on LPG supplies, particularly for households and commercial entities that faced disruptions due to West Asian conflicts.
IGL is actively connecting fast-food chains, with over 100 outlets already on PNG and a similar number in progress, identifying them as crucial for this energy transition. Police stations in Delhi are also being equipped with PNG to streamline kitchen operations. The ambitious plan includes targeting 4.85 lakh new PNG connections in the next 90 days across its operating regions. Connaught Place, a major commercial hub, is now being connected following relaxed norms.
A government mandate, effective as of last month, requires households with access to both PNG and LPG to switch to PNG within 90 days, or face discontinued LPG cylinder supply. This policy aims to transition areas with existing PNG infrastructure to be LPG-free. India's natural gas availability is sufficient, unlike LPG, which is largely imported and vulnerable to global shipping route disruptions.
