ICICI Lombard: Profit Soars on Investments Amidst Slow Growth
21 Oct
Summary
- ICICI Lombard profit rose due to a 28% investment income jump.
- Underwriting suffered, but investment gains offset losses.
- New regulations favor scale players like ICICI Lombard.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company's recent financial performance showcased a notable profit increase, largely fueled by a substantial 28% surge in investment income as of October 15, 2026. This boost was partly attributed to capital gains of Rs 450 crore, compared to Rs 240 crore in the previous year, with a portion of gains from its NSE stake appearing in the second quarter.
Despite the positive profit trend, the company's underwriting results worsened, leading to a combined ratio exceeding 100%. This was primarily due to a rise in distribution costs, with the commission ratio climbing to 20.4% from 19.1%, attributed to a greater focus on retail business. Motor third-party claims showed improvement, but health insurance loss ratios increased.
The company's growth outpaced the industry, with overall growth at 66.4% against the industry's 32%, increasing its market share. Management anticipates continued support from new regulations that compress distribution costs, which is expected to benefit large-scale insurers like ICICI Lombard.
Looking ahead, ICICI Securities maintains a BUY rating and has raised its target price for ICICI Lombard to Rs 2,000, forecasting a 13.5% PAT CAGR over FY26-28E, with FY28E expected to show a significant rebound.
