21 Sep
Summary
- HSBC secured $14.5 billion via RBI swap facility.
- Attractive leverage option drew significant depositor interest.
- Funds will cautiously expand corporate lending and mortgages.
HSBC has successfully mobilized $14.5 billion in foreign currency non-resident (FCNR) deposits, leveraging a special swap facility provided by the Reserve Bank of India. This substantial inflow, the second largest among participating banks, is poised to significantly enhance HSBC's wealth management and retail banking operations in India. The bank attracted depositors by offering a compelling leverage option of up to 19 times the deposited amount, with a considerable portion of these funds committed for a five-year term.
The strategy for deploying these funds is cautious, focusing on expanding corporate lending and mortgage offerings, including a recently launched attractive three-year fixed mortgage product. HSBC's presence in Gift City, Gujarat, played a key role, accounting for $10.9 billion of the funds mobilized through the international financial services center. Deposits originated from over 30 markets globally, with the Middle East, Singapore, and Hong Kong being the top contributors.
Globally, the Middle East led contributions to HSBC's FCNR(B) scheme, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong. Depositors hailed from more than 30 countries, underscoring HSBC's extensive global reach and preparedness for engaging with the 'global Indian' diaspora. The bank's existing six-year operation in Gift City provided a distinct advantage, allowing it to tap into a large client base.
HSBC plans to utilize the liquidity generated from this scheme conservatively. Deployment tools identified include match-funded corporate lending and mortgages, alongside potential investments in government securities. The bank is actively developing its capabilities and expanding its physical presence with plans for 12 additional branches. This strategic move aims to provide a full suite of products to its wealthy clientele, further strengthening its position in the Indian market.
