Summary
- Honda repurposes Ohio battery plant for AI data centers.
- Plant originally built for electric vehicle batteries.
- Hybrid vehicle batteries to be produced starting in 2028.

Honda Motor is adapting its manufacturing strategy by repurposing its Ohio battery plant to cater to the rapidly expanding AI data center sector. This decision follows a reassessment of its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions due to softer-than-anticipated consumer demand.
The plant, a joint venture with LG Energy Solution, initially focused on producing lithium-ion batteries for EVs. However, with scaled-back EV development, Honda redirected the facility's capacity toward energy storage systems crucial for data centers. This pivot aligns with a wider industry movement supporting the significant power requirements of artificial intelligence technologies.
Looking ahead, Honda intends to resume production of hybrid vehicle batteries at the Ohio facility beginning in 2028. The automaker acquired the plant's assets for $2.5 billion and will dynamically allocate production between energy storage and hybrid batteries in response to evolving market conditions.
