Defense startup Hermeus has achieved a $1 billion valuation following a recent funding round totaling $350 million. The company is dedicated to developing what it describes as the "fastest unmanned aircraft." This latest investment includes $200 million in equity financing, spearheaded by Khosla Ventures, with participation from existing and new investors.
An additional $150 million has been secured through debt financing. This strategic move allows Hermeus to expand its manufacturing capabilities and maintain control while developing complex hardware. The company's progress is bolstered by a technical shift to modify Pratt & Whitney's F100 engine, accelerating its path to Mach 5 speeds.
Hermeus has successfully conducted flight tests with demonstrator aircraft, including a recent flight of an F-16 sized version. The company embraces a rapid prototyping approach, akin to SpaceX, involving build, test, fail, and learn cycles. This strategy aims to expedite aircraft development, which traditionally takes decades.
The new capital will also support Hermeus's growing team, which is nearing 300 employees. While anticipating potential failures as part of the development process, Hermeus is focused on strategically managing risks to efficiently mature its hypersonic technology and secure government contracts.
