Heating Oil Prices Skyrocket Amidst Middle East Conflict
18 Mar
Summary
- Heating oil prices have more than doubled in three weeks.
- 1.7 million UK households rely on heating oil for warmth.
- Government support package criticized as insufficient for households.

The cost of heating oil, a primary heat source for 1.7 million British households, has seen an alarming increase. William Ellis, a 73-year-old from Retford, Nottinghamshire, was shocked to find his usual 500-litre order had jumped from £284 to £735 in just three weeks.
This surge is linked to the war in the Middle East, which is causing supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for fuel shipments. Approximately 40 percent of Europe's kerosene-based fuels, including heating oil, originate from this region. Heating oil firms face accusations of price gouging.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves acknowledged the 'real and urgent problem' for low-income households. The government announced a £53 million support package, but this amounts to roughly £35 per household, a sum deemed insufficient by critics compared to the escalating bills.
Plans are underway to regulate the heating oil sector and implement consumer protections. However, these measures are unlikely to offer immediate relief to those struggling with current price hikes. Many rural households not connected to the gas network depend on heating oil, typically delivered by tanker and stored on-site.
