RBI Scrutiny: HDFC Bank Top Job Race Heats Up
22 Sep
Summary
- RBI reviews Anup Bagchi's suitability for HDFC CEO role.
- Kaizad Bharucha faces tenure cap challenges for the CEO position.
- HDFC Bank seeks CEO appointment before October 26 deadline.

The Reserve Bank of India is closely examining the candidacy of Anup Bagchi, the Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, for the top leadership role at HDFC Bank. Bagchi, who previously headed wholesale banking at ICICI Bank, has been away from mainstream banking for over three years.
The central bank is assessing if his time in the insurance sector might impact his adaptation to evolving banking regulations. Feedback from the insurance regulator and ICICI Bank is being sought. HDFC Bank has proposed Bagchi and deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha to the RBI.
Bharucha, also a contender, has been with HDFC Bank since June 2014 and will reach the RBI's 15-year tenure limit in June 2029. The bank has requested a six-month relaxation to allow him a full three-year term, though such dispensations are rare.
HDFC Bank submitted its application to the RBI this month, aiming for a decision before current CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan's term concludes on October 26. The RBI typically takes over 35 days to process such appointments, creating a tight timeline.
