AI Boom Fuels Korean Giant's US Power Grid Expansion

The company's Alabama facility, already the largest ultra-high-voltage transformer plant in the US, is undergoing a $200 million expansion. This project, set for completion in April 2027, will increase annual production capacity by 50%. Notably, this additional capacity is already fully committed for several years, with initial shipments to "Big Tech" firms planned for later in 2026. HD Hyundai Electric holds an estimated 15% to 20% share of the US high-voltage transformer market.
HD Hyundai Electric's shares have seen substantial growth, nearly quadrupling in the past year. This surge highlights a widening supply-demand gap for transformers, exacerbated by the proliferation of AI data centers and a domestic shortage of manufacturing capacity. The new facility will bolster the US supply of critical 765-kilovolt transformers, essential for high-voltage transmission, with Hyosung Heavy Industries Corp. being the only other domestic producer.
The company recently secured its largest single order on record: a 278 billion won deal with Texas's largest utility for 765-kilovolt transformers. This demonstrates the growing need for advanced grid components. HD Hyundai Electric supplies at least 30 of the largest US utilities and is evaluating further capacity expansions in late 2026 or early 2027.
