Hanley shops face demolition for future development
11 Mar
Summary
- Ten derelict shops on Parliament Row in Hanley will be demolished.
- The demolition is in preparation for future, unconfirmed development.
- Previous plans for retail and residential conversion were never realized.

Derelict shops in Hanley's city centre are set for demolition to prepare for future development. Ten empty units on Parliament Row and the adjacent Abakhan Fabrics site on Old Hall Street will be razed after the city council approved the demolition plans.
The vacant units had been temporarily fenced off last year as debris began falling from the aging structures. Planning documents indicate the entire site's demolition is expected to take approximately 12 weeks.
The specific details of the future redevelopment have not yet been disclosed. Notably, prior plans approved in 2015 to clear the site for a retail development were never implemented. More recent proposals to convert the upper floors into apartments were also abandoned as the building was deemed too deteriorated for occupation or conversion.
