Hang Seng Index Set for Major Shake-up
21 Aug
Summary
- Hang Seng Index may add chipmaker Hua Hong and AI firm.
- Index compiler to announce quarterly review results Friday.
- Index expansion aims for balanced representation of market.

The Hang Seng Index is anticipated to undergo a substantial quarterly review, with analysts suggesting potential additions including chipmaker Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor and AI-focused Kingboard Laminates. The index compiler is scheduled to release the outcomes of its review after market close on Friday. Any resulting adjustments are slated to be implemented in two phases, beginning September 7 and concluding by September 14. This periodic rebalancing serves as a key indicator of top-performing companies based on metrics like market capitalization and turnover. Inclusion often leads to increased investment from index-tracking funds, bolstering the selected stocks.
The Hang Seng Index itself has shown resilience, recovering 13% from its June low and is on course to end three consecutive quarters of losses. Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor is projected to attract approximately $184 million in passive inflows if added, representing the largest potential inflow among prospective entrants. Kingboard Laminates, a supplier to the printed circuit board industry, has also been highlighted for its strong performance, benefiting significantly from the AI buildout, with its stock soaring over 170% in 2026. Zijin Gold International Co. is another contender, though its low free float of less than 15% poses a challenge for inclusion. Hang Seng Indexes aims to grow the index to 100 members from its current 93, fostering a more representative picture of Hong Kong's stock market. Furthermore, the Hang Seng Tech Index is also under review for an overhaul, with a focus on incorporating more companies from the rapidly expanding AI and robotics sectors. Stakeholder feedback for this revamp is being gathered until September 18, with final revisions expected by the end of next month.
