11 Mar
Summary
- Members increasingly prioritize strength over cardio workouts.
- The Gym Group reported an 8% sales increase to £245 million.
- Gen Z members, 44% of the base, exercise at least twice weekly.

The Gym Group is observing a significant shift in member preferences, with a growing emphasis on strength training over traditional cardio workouts. This evolution in fitness goals, driven by a desire to 'feel and look strong,' has prompted the operator of 260 UK gyms to reallocate space and resources towards weightlifting equipment and advanced machinery.
This strategic adjustment aligns with a strong financial performance. The company reported an 8% year-on-year increase in sales, totaling £245 million. Revenue for January and February, peak months, saw a 9% rise. The average membership age is around 30, with Gen Z comprising a substantial 44% of members last year.
Geographic expansion is also a key focus, with 16 new sites opened in 2025, primarily around London. The Gym Group plans to open at least 20 more sites in 2026 and aims for 75 new locations over the next three years. The company's adjusted pre-tax profit nearly tripled, indicating robust growth and market penetration.
