10 Aug
Summary
- Guotai Junan shares surged 36% after its parent proposed privatization.
- The offer represents a 44.2% premium over the last trading price.
- The deal values the offshore unit at HK$28.59 billion ($3.64 billion).

Hong Kong-listed shares of Guotai Junan International experienced a significant surge, climbing 36% at Monday's opening. This remarkable increase followed a formal proposal from its parent firm, Guotai Haitong Securities, to take the company private.
The parent's offer, presented on Friday, includes a substantial premium of 44.2% over the company's closing price on July 23, before its offshore unit entered a trading halt. The proposed transaction values Guotai Junan International at HK$28.59 billion ($3.64 billion).
This privatization move by the Shanghai-headquartered parent is part of a broader strategy to streamline its international operations. It comes in the wake of a significant merger completed in early 2025 between Guotai Junan and Haitong Securities. This landmark consolidation formed China's largest brokerage firm based on net assets, following the delisting of Haitong from stock exchanges in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
