South Gujarat Power Grid Gets Cyclone-Proof Upgrade
25 Feb
Summary
- 6,906 km of HT lines are now underground, with 7,000 km more planned.
- Ring Main Units installed increased from five to 1,698, aiming for 8,610.
- Overhead lines are being replaced with safer covered conductors.

Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Ltd (DGVCL) is undertaking a major infrastructure upgrade across its service area, focusing on underground cabling, grid automation, and safer overhead conductors. This initiative aims to bolster power distribution and improve supply reliability, particularly for coastal regions susceptible to cyclone-like conditions.
As of February 25, 2026, DGVCL has already laid 6,906 km of high-tension (HT) electricity lines underground and plans to add another 7,000 km over the next two years. This represents a substantial increase from previous phases, highlighting the accelerated pace of modernization.
The utility is also significantly expanding its installation of Ring Main Units (RMUs), crucial for enhancing reliability and managing faults. The number of RMUs has grown from five in 2005 to 1,698, with a target of 8,610 units within two years. Additionally, DGVCL is actively replacing conventional overhead distribution lines with Medium Voltage Covered Conductors (MVCC) to improve safety and reduce external faults.
Despite these extensive upgrades, some industrial stakeholders in Surat express concerns about persistent power interruptions in certain industrial zones, suggesting that transmission infrastructure managed by GETCO also requires strengthening for a completely uninterrupted supply.
