Gujarat Industries Brace for War-Induced Trade Chaos
8 Mar
Summary
- Diamond trade with Dubai halted by transport disruptions.
- Ceramic sector faces fuel shortage and potential shutdowns.
- Escalating war impacts Gujarat's export-reliant industries.

Gujarat's significant diamond and ceramic industries are experiencing severe economic distress due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, primarily impacting their export-oriented operations. The diamond sector faces logistical nightmares, with daily trade between Surat, Mumbai, and Dubai coming to a standstill. Approximately 70% of rough and polished diamonds typically transit through Dubai.
The ceramic industry, particularly in Morbi, is confronting an existential threat from a potential fuel shortage. Disruptions in supply from the Strait of Hormuz could lead to a halt in LPG and petroleum, forcing around 500 units to cease operations.
This situation exacerbates existing challenges for these industries, which are crucial for India's exports and employment. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is closely monitoring the situation, urging government intervention to mitigate potential impacts on production schedules and financial stability.
