Officials in Guangdong, China's southern manufacturing and tech powerhouse, announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence across its vast $2 trillion economy. This strategic push follows Beijing's launch of an "AI plus" initiative aimed at embedding AI throughout the nation's economic landscape. The province's latest government work report and five-year policy blueprint now prioritize AI-driven industrial upgrading as a key driver for economic expansion.
Guangdong, a critical node in global supply chains for products like smartphones and electric vehicles, sees its AI deployment as a factor in how the European Union and United States manage their supply chain risks concerning China. The province, which has led China's economies for over three decades, achieved a GDP of approximately 14.6 trillion yuan ($2.1 trillion) in 2025, surpassing economies like Australia.
Provincial leaders, including Governor Meng Fanli and Party Secretary Huang Kunming, have committed to deepening AI applications and accelerating the commercialization of AI technologies. This includes substantial investment in new infrastructure like large-scale computing clusters. Shenzhen, a premier tech hub within Guangdong, reported double-digit growth in AI, robotics, and semiconductors last year, with strategic emerging industries accounting for 43% of its GDP. Shenzhen is actively pursuing domestic substitution in chipmaking equipment and software, areas currently facing U.S. restrictions, and seeks stronger central support for a self-sufficient AI ecosystem.
State capital in Guangdong will also be directed towards advanced manufacturing sectors such as AI and drones. Auto manufacturers, like GAC Group, are planning to enhance AI integration into autonomous driving systems, reflecting the broad impact of this AI-driven transformation across industries.
