Summary
- Grounded secured $5 million in seed funding in 2026.
- The company is expanding to a new 50,000 sq ft Detroit facility.
- Grounded customizes vehicles for diverse sectors like commercial and medical.

Founded in 2022, Detroit-based Grounded has secured $5 million in seed funding to bolster its flexible approach to vehicle customization. The startup, initially focused on electric vans for "van life," has pivoted to serve small businesses and now any fleet need, regardless of power source. This strategic shift comes after the discontinuation of GM's BrightDrop and Ford's plans for a next-gen electric Transit, alongside general challenges in the EV market.
Grounded's new 50,000-square-foot Detroit manufacturing facility marks a significant expansion. The company plans to scale its core modular design business to be vehicle-agnostic, accommodating both electric and combustion-powered vehicles. Production is set to begin this month, with capacity increasing next year. This facility enables Grounded to meet the scale required by fleet customers and adapt to a broader range of commercial vehicles.
The company has already secured commercial clients such as Colgate and Nokia, alongside medical and veterinary sector customers like Wayne State University Medical. Grounded is observing notable growth in the food and beverage and public safety sectors. CEO Sam Shapiro emphasized that Grounded is a "platform company" focused on the customizable "workspace or living space" built atop a vehicle's chassis, not solely an EV or vehicle manufacturer.
