4 Mar
Summary
- Costco and BJ's lead savings, requiring memberships.
- Lidl and Aldi offer significant savings over Walmart.
- Trader Joe's is surprisingly more expensive than Walmart.

A recent consumer report has identified six grocery chains that consistently offer lower prices compared to Walmart. Costco and BJ's Wholesale Club secured the top spots, with their membership models providing substantial savings on bulk purchases. German discount chains Lidl and Aldi also outperformed Walmart, continuing their established reputation for affordability.
WinCo Foods and Texas-based H-E-B were the final two retailers to beat Walmart on price. In contrast, Trader Joe's was found to be a surprising 24.6 percent more expensive than Walmart, with Whole Foods ranking as the priciest among those studied.
The rankings, conducted by Strategic Resource Group, analyzed the total cost of a basket of packaged goods, produce, and meat in six major U.S. metropolitan areas during late summer 2025. The comparison included in-store sales and loyalty discounts but excluded manufacturer coupons and app-only deals.
