UK Swaps Gas for Green: EVs, Solar Surge Amid War Fears

Amidst global energy price volatility triggered by the Iran crisis, British households are demonstrating a record surge in demand for green home energy upgrades. This trend is driven by the anticipation of an 18% increase in energy bills from July, bringing the typical annual cost to £1,929.

Leading energy suppliers like Octopus Energy have reported substantial increases in orders. In March, Octopus saw heat pump orders more than double compared to February, with solar power system sales up by almost 80% and electric vehicle leases rising by over 85%.

British Gas also noted a significant rise in inquiries for solar panel installations, a 250% increase since late February, and a notable interest in heat pumps. This shift reflects a desire to mitigate the impact of fluctuating global fossil fuel prices.

Customers like Allan Burgess have switched from volatile heating oil, which is not covered by Ofgem's cap, to heat pumps. Burgess experienced a dramatic price increase for heating oil, highlighting the urgent need for stable, home-grown energy solutions.

Providers like Furbnow report a 42% increase in inquiries, with a strong focus on reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Almost three-quarters of prospective customers are requesting solar panels, and over half are interested in replacing gas or oil boilers with electric heat pumps. Upgraded insulation is also a popular request, indicating a comprehensive approach to home energy resilience.
