Vancouver City Council has allocated $4.75 million to establish a five-block pedestrian zone on Granville Street, stretching from West Georgia to Davie Street. This initiative aims to revitalize the struggling downtown strip by incorporating patios, programming, and increased policing. The decision has sparked debate among local businesses.
Aldo Velaj, owner of three Granville Street restaurants, expressed enthusiasm, noting the positive energy and potential for the street to become a hub for events. He believes the city successfully transformed the area during the FIFA World Cup with minimal enhancements. Velaj envisions the pedestrian zone hosting concerts and DJs in the future.
Conversely, Patrick Shaughnessy, owner of Golden Age Collectibles, voiced concerns. Having operated on Granville Street since 1979, he is skeptical about sustaining momentum after the World Cup, citing historical social problems that he fears will persist. A recent Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA) document echoed these worries, highlighting a one-in-four storefront vacancy rate and 'longstanding social challenges.'
The DVBIA received $1.25 million for programming, installations, art, and lighting for the remainder of the summer. The Vancouver Police Department received an additional $1.4 million to enhance their presence. Council's 20-year plan includes piloting pedestrian zones and supporting arts and culture in its initial five years, with a long-term vision for a permanent pedestrian zone. The city and province are also working to close three Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels in the area.
