Google.org has pledged $15 million to The/Nudge, an Indian action institute, to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools aimed at empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across India. This significant funding will focus on improving MSMEs' access to formal credit, expanding their market reach, and simplifying regulatory compliance.
The initiative will also feature an open call for proposals to identify innovative solutions for business challenges. Furthermore, it plans to launch a multilingual, voice-led platform to deliver job-ready skills training to residents of Tier III and IV towns, directly connecting them with small businesses seeking talent.
This investment arrives as India's MSME sector, which employs over 345 million people across more than 90 million businesses, continues to grapple with financing and market access issues. Google emphasizes that AI must serve as a practical multiplier for these businesses to truly drive economic growth.
Complementing private efforts, the Indian government is also bolstering the sector. The IndiaAI Mission, with a five-year outlay of Rs 10,371.92 crore, supports AI development, while a Rs 10,000 crore SME Growth Fund was approved for direct equity investment. Public banks are also leveraging digital credit assessments, having sanctioned nearly 99,000 MSME loan applications under this model recently.
