Google AI Limits Hit Meta's Projects
28 Jun
Summary
- Google limited Meta's use of its Gemini AI models.
- Meta faced project delays due to AI capacity shortfalls.
- Companies struggle to secure enough AI computing power.

Google, owned by Alphabet, informed Meta around March that it could not fulfill the full Gemini AI model capacity Meta intended to purchase. This limitation has reportedly disrupted and delayed some of Meta's internal artificial intelligence projects.
While several other Google clients experienced minor impacts, Meta was particularly affected due to its exceptionally high demand for Google's AI models. As a result, Meta has begun encouraging staff to be more efficient with their usage of AI tokens, which measure AI consumption.
This situation underscores a wider industry struggle, as companies continue to invest heavily in chips and data centers but still face challenges in securing sufficient computing power to meet the escalating demand for AI services. Google Cloud's revenue grew significantly, but constraints on computing power prevented even greater growth.
