Gold Surges: Treasury Boost, Weak Dollar Drive Prices
19 Aug
Summary
- Gold prices reached their highest point since early June.
- Treasury's liquidity support announcement boosted gold's value.
- A weakening dollar provided a significant tailwind for gold.

Gold prices experienced a significant upswing, reaching their highest point since early June on Wednesday. This surge broke a period of general stagnation for the precious metal throughout the summer months.
Analysts have largely credited the recent rally to the Treasury Department's announcement on Wednesday. The department stated it would double the size of its liquidity support buyback operations for 10-to-30-year securities, providing a jolt to the market.
Further contributing to gold's ascent is a weakening U.S. dollar. The dollar index saw a decline of approximately 0.7% as of Wednesday afternoon. This combination of lower yields and a weaker dollar is reinforcing the recovery seen since early August.
Prior to this recent surge, gold had experienced a stagnant summer, largely trading between $4,000 and $4,200. The preceding quarter ending June 30 saw gold shed about 16% of its value, its worst quarterly decline since 2013. Analysts had previously attributed this slump to a stronger dollar and expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes.
