Goa is actively pursuing Geographical Indication (GI) recognition for its Pipyri cucumber, a distinctive tender variety. This proposal is expected to be filed next month, with hopes for the process to conclude by the year's end.
The Pipyri cucumber is particularly associated with regions like Ponda, Madkai, and Honda, though it's grown across Goa. Unlike larger market cucumbers, it is harvested while tender and finger-sized, boasting a yellowish-green hue, enhanced sweetness, and a unique flavour.
While precise cultivation data is pending a digital crop survey, the agriculture department anticipates clearer figures soon. A key aspect supporting the GI application is the traditional cultivation practice where farmers avoid chemical pesticides during flowering, opting for natural pest control methods.
If granted, Pipyri would be Goa's inaugural GI-recognized cucumber. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to conserve indigenous varieties, with proposals also being prepared for the zayo flower and Goan crochet and broom, ensuring traditional producers benefit economically.
