Summary
- GM and Unifor reached a three-year labor deal.
- Over C$1 billion in new investment is headed to Ontario.
- The deal covers more than 4,600 workers across Ontario.

General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) successfully ratified a three-year labor agreement with Unifor, an accord that promises over C$1 billion in new investments across Ontario, Canada. This landmark deal, ratified on August 29 and 30, encompasses more than 4,600 workers and injects significant capital into the region.
Significant funding is allocated to various facilities. Oshawa will receive C$144 million to commence production of the next-generation Heavy-Duty GMC Sierra, supplementing an earlier C$343 million commitment. St. Catharines is slated for a C$215 million investment in a new transmission program by late 2029, in addition to C$691 million already earmarked for V8 engine manufacturing.
The agreement arrives amid challenging trade conditions, with the Canadian auto sector impacted by U.S. tariffs. GM's robust financial health, evidenced by exceeding second-quarter earnings expectations and raising its full-year guidance, positions it favorably to meet these Canadian investment obligations.
Furthermore, GM pledged to explore alternatives for its CAMI plant in Ingersoll, including potential defense work, rather than immediate sale or closure. This strategic move could mitigate risks associated with evolving trade policies and fluctuating North American manufacturing needs, while protecting GM's high-margin pickup and SUV business.
