GM Earnings Surge: Profit Beats Expectations
21 Jul
Summary
- Second-quarter adjusted earnings beat analyst expectations.
- Full-year adjusted EBIT guidance was raised for the second time.
- EV capacity charges impacted GAAP net income significantly.

General Motors announced strong second-quarter financial results, with adjusted earnings per share reaching $3.57 on $48.03 billion in revenue, exceeding analyst forecasts. The company's adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) saw a significant 30% increase, reaching $3.9 billion. Adjusted automotive free cash flow nearly doubled to $5.0 billion.
However, the reported GAAP net income attributable to stockholders fell 31% to $1.3 billion. This decrease was largely due to $2.3 billion in charges associated with the company's electric vehicle (EV) capacity and manufacturing footprint.
Despite the GAAP figures, CEO Mary Barra highlighted positive performance in North America, with EBIT-adjusted margins climbing to 8.6%. She attributed this to reduced warranty costs, lower EV losses, and improved operational efficiency. GM International, including joint ventures in China, also reported profitability.
Looking ahead, General Motors has elevated its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to a range of $14 billion to $16 billion, representing its second upward revision for the year. The automaker also increased its adjusted automotive free cash flow forecast to $9.5 billion to $11.5 billion.
